End-of-life Doula Support

The inevitable, final transition in our lives is our death. We don’t always have plans for it, and it helps to have choices and understand the options we have. We also don’t always have the opportunity to make those choices for ourselves.

A Doula can guide someone who is dying, and their loved ones through the process by letting them know what to expect and acting as an advocate for their vision and choices with health care providers, funeral homes, and other providers who are involved.

I can assist by walking through choices with you, delving into the pro’s and con’s and helping you make informed decisions.

By listening and supporting, I can provide resources and an understanding of the journey as it unfolds, by making the end-of-life experience an intimate, sacred and rich experience for everyone involved.

* Doula services are available in the Cairns, Port Douglas, Atherton Tablelands and Cassowary Coast areas.

FAQ’s

We have put together a list of our most frequently asked questions.

What is a Doula?

A Doula is a non-medically trained person who can provide options and support to those who are dying, and their loved ones.

A Doula supports by helping enable wishes to be carried out, preserving quality of life, self-worth and wellbeing during one of the loneliest stages of our life.

Why end-of-life?

Adding end-of-life services for people seemed like a natural transition and addition to my services. The loss of a close family member brought about so many questions and a lack of information about end-of-life, and the process of death.

The support offered within the system is great, but specific information was lacking. Having someone there who could explain it and provide much needed support and education, would have been a real help through such a difficult time.

What can you help me with?

I can help with development of an Advanced Care Plan, which if we are unable to communicate, provides information to our care team about what we want.

Other services include information and advocacy, and support to make choices about what we would like to happen such as what kind of goodbye you would like, and what happens with pets.

Will you tell me what to do?

I will not tell you what to do, but rather work with you and support you so you are able to make your own decisions.

What about confidentiality?

The same confidentiality requirements and assurance apply as with counselling sessions. View can read our privacy policy here.

Do I have to be alone?

No. Loved ones are encouraged to be with you.

Can you provide Doula and Counselling services for the same person?

I am bound by strict Codes of Conduct and Ethics for both Doula and Counselling practice. The service provided must be one or the other. Both services cannot be provided for the same person.

Do we get another pet?

After losing a pet, often we’re filled with a hole in our hearts. We desperately want a new pet to love, but the feelings of guilt and dread start.
